Berkeley 1900, Daily Life at the Turn of the Century

Berkeley 1900 ~ A Bygone Era
Richard Schwartz paints a picture of Berkeley in words that transports you back in time. Interesting and lively, the stories show life around the turn of the 20th century. Even for people who don't live in the Berkeley area, the characters and pictures are fascinating. A must-read for anyone who wants a sense of how life really was around 1900.

Opening up a New Side of Berkeley
This book really gave me a different perspective on Berkeley, the geography and the people. The way the information was delivered brought the book to life and added depth. It is not in any way a "typical" history book. The vignettes about the people made the time period approachable and real. A must read for anyone who has ever been to or lived in Berkeley.

yes yes yes
Just a few words to tell you how much I enjoyed "Berkeley 1900." I saw
pictures about a past I never knew existed. It gave me an appreciation of
Berkeley I never thought I would have. Prior to seeing the book, I thought
Berkeley was just a bunch of pinkos.

The Brown Derby Restaurant: A Hollywood Legend
Anyone who is interested in old Hollywood must read this book.It is not only filled with pictures andrecipes, but nostalgia and history ofbygone days.Robert Cobb, not only owned the BrownDerby, but also owned a baseball team. The Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League was in existence from 1939to 1957. The Los Angeles Dodgers cameWest in 1958 and the Stars were gone. The book was co-written by Sally Cobb, widow of the owner. Her personal thoughts and love are written throughout this book. I personally ama collector of old menu's and a historian regarding the Pacific CoastLeague. I certainly was fascinated andwrapped up in the book.

The Brown Derby: Wonderful Photos and Stories
A priceless photo collection of Hollywood Stars that have never been released or seen since the 1940's and 1950's. The photos are from the late Sally and Bob Cobb's personal photo collection and some photos were taken by Geroge Hurrell. The stories are captivating, heart warming and a part of Hollywood history that is a must for movie buffs and the novice a like. Clark Gable and Bob Cobb spent many years together, hunting and fishing. One night after the kitchen at the Durby was closed, Bob mixed a salad together made mostly from left overs. Since that night the famous salad has been referred to as the "Cobb Salad". The story that best describes the Cobbs is the one story about the WWII soldier..very touching! A great gift or a nice coffee table conversation item!

Fabulous Photos! Fabulous Stories! Fabulous Food!
You don't have to be a fan of "old" Hollywood to enjoy this wonderful book about a famous restaurant and its even more famous clientele. Fascinating stories accompanied by wonderful pictures. This is only enhanced by the actual recipes of this great restaurant. A wonderful coffee table book that will start conversations about movies, movie stars and great food.

Burning Point
Published in Paperback by ALA Editions (May, 2000)
Author: Dennis N. Hinkle
Average review score:

changed me
I found this book at a rummage sale for a buck. I started reading it at the book store and couldn't stop. The language is very touching. While I read this book I stopped often. It's like you have to digest the words to hear their melody. It is really incredible when a book changes you. Changes your perspective and allows you to see through the eyes of another. It did this for me. I just finished reading it, and I want to read it again this time slower. It is one of those books that while you read it you want to tell the world go read it. it's good. maria

Life Changing
Denny Hinkle's book gave me back something that I'd lost. It was an understanding of my own journey, replete with valleys and peaks, many joys and many sorrows. Like Denny, I followed society's conventions, was married, and had a family. All the while, denying a very basic part of myself and my nature. When life's circumstances allowed me to begin to be exactly who I was, I found self-acceptance and self-love awaiting me. "Burning Point" is not easy to read. You have to stop often and look inside yourself, get in touch with your own life, and often times utter a prayer of thanks that you didn't undergo some of the family trauma that was a part of his daily existence. I raced to the end of this book and found joy...for Denny and for me. So will you. This book is written from the heart and Denny Hinkle's heart connected with my own.

A Courageous Memoir
In this courageous memoir, Dr. Hinkle weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of sensuality, longing and self-discovery. We are invited into his world by an image that is with me still: Appearing from the mist, ethereal and angelic, a blond boy on a hill, sent to teach acceptance of one's truest self. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Hinkle relates his history with riveting prose in an uncompromising, yet compassionate manner. His journey encourages the reader to discover their own unrealized selves - to challenge their own limits and bravely put one foot in front of the other. I have tremendous admiration for the life he has lived and the love he has found.

California Heritage Cookbook
Thank you so much for the cookbook. I received it in a timely manner and it was in perfect condition. What a wonderful way to receive a book that was impossible to find before.

Best cookbook ever!
I received this cookbook in the hardback edition from a friend back in 1980. I have used and used it over and over again. There are many favorites that I have used again and again; the Tahoe Brunch and Lasagne, to name only two. Buy it an see for yourself!!

MY DAUGHTER IS LIVING IN AN APARTMENT WHILE ATTENDING COLLEGE AND ASKED IF SHE COULD HAVE HER FAVORITE COOKBOOK TO TAKE TO SCHOOL ... CALIFORNIA HERITAGE! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COOKBOOK TO ABSOLUTELY ANYONE WHO ENJOYS EATING OR COOKING. I AM NOW SEARCHING FOR TWO ADDITIONAL COPIES.

Canoeing the California Highlands: A Quiet Water Guide to Paddler's Paradise
Published in Paperback by Changing Sky Pubns (April, 1999)
Author: John Coale
Average review score:

Invaluable!
I'm hesitant to leave a review because some of the locations listed in this book are still peaceful and unknown, but this book is so invaluable when hunting for a good paddle spot that I felt compelled to sing it's praises....as long as it's just canoers who purchase this great book and not power boaters! The directions are easy to follow and accurate. The camping information is extremely important when traveling with children, like we do.The lay out of the book is perfect in helping to select drive times and specific locations. I came back to Amazon to purchase the book for a friend but see that it is out of stock. Hopefully this is just temporary. If not, buy it used!!

Excellent Book that will be used over and over again
Coale goes into just enough details so that you get a feel for the area and its surroundings. He also gives suggestions for where to camp. There are advisories for a variety of items: seasonal accessibility, powerboats, potable water, overcrowding, campground closures, etc. Each lake description also comes with high quality images and a map. The images are very impressive. I don't see any bylines for the photographs, so I'm assuming they were taken by Coale. In the back of the book there is a spreadsheet of all the lakes with the following columns: Natural Lake, Paddle-In Camping, Lakeside Camping, Winter Access, Long distance Paddling, No Motors/Speed Limits, Exquisite Beauty. I have no complaints about CTCH and I think it will be very helpful in designing some 4 day trips this summer. I give the book 5 stars ***** :)

the book is beautfully done.
dear john coale-congradulation on creating a book that anyone not even interested in paddling would enjoy. the pictures are breathtaking and succeed in capturing the feelings of the moment, such beautiful scenery. i wish your book great success. sincerly, lia medina, mill valley

Common Dragonflies of California : A Beginner's Pocket Guide
Published in Paperback by Azalea Creek Publishing (05 April, 2000)
Author: Kathy R. Biggs
Average review score:

The Perfect Field Guide
As a beginner in the study of these fascinating and beautiful creatures, I found this book clear, concise, and easy to understand and use. The text is simple and complete, and the illustrations are excellent. The small size of the volume makes it fit easily into your pocket for quick reference. Anyone interested in dragonflies will find the book an absolute MUST!

A Wonderful Pocket Guide!
Common Dragonflies of California is an uncommon book. Full of sound advice and chock full of excellent color photos, this book will be of great interest to any California nature lover. I am the kind of person who loves to know the name of every tree, shrub, flower, reptile, bird and fish that I see. Now that I have this little jewel, I'm going to learn how to identify the dragonflies too. The more we learn about nature, the more enjoyment we get from it. I highly recommend this fine book! I expect it would make a great present too, for the right person. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening

A valuable field guide. Easy to use. Great photographs.
This is really nice field guide to have. The photographs are great. Each entry is succint and includes one or two photographs together with a bold line the length of the dragonfly and printed in one of the dominant colors of the dragonfly. There is a checklist in the back so that you can keep track of what you see, and the introductory information in the front of the book is well-written. Though I bought this book for myself, I think that it also would make a great field guide for a child since the book is small, easy to use, and the photos are clear and attractive. It is well worth the price.

The Definitive Guide to Fishing Central California
Published in Paperback by Shafdog Publications (23 April, 2002)
Author: Chris Shaffer
Average review score:

Most Amazing Guide Ever for Fishing in California!!!
Everyone I know that is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman loves this book as well as all the others written by Mr. Shaffer. Not only are the descriptions excellent, but the pictures give a clear indication of what you are going to see and experience at each locale. Without question, I would recommend this book to anyone I know and already have done so.

A Great Present
My dad is the kind of dad who has everything. I spent months and months looking for a Christmas present for him when i came across this book. He always talks about how he wishes he could go fishing more and this book was perfect for him because of all the different fishing spots it covers. It gave him ideas of all the different places to go that he has never been to before. I know he really liked the book, but i liked it too because of all the pictures.

I love this book
Even if you don't fish, this book will give you great advise on places to go for camping or family outings and how to get the most out of it. Directions to all sites included.

California Home Cooking: American Cooking in the California Style
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Common Pr (December, 1997)
Author: Michele Anna Jordan
Average review score:

A Must Have That Requires Creativity
The book is very inspiring and well written. The most important thing, being the recipies, are a must have! I bought it for my mom for her birthday (and my mom has every cook book in the world). I am constantly finding the perfect course or side dish to add for just the right touch. If you like being creative and trying your own hand at modifying recipies you'll be pleasantly surprised. Try adding Lemon to the Artichoke, Chicken and Chive soup - it's SO good.

ONE of the BEST
I picked up this cookbook as I left California. It has become my favorite with each recipe a winner with cook and guest. I especially enjoy the emphasis on fresh ingredients and the ethnic food selections that we were accustomed to in the restaurants in the San Francisco North Bay area. Highly recommend.

Not just a great cookbook
I have been a fan of Michele Anna Jordan's writing for a long, long time. Her recipes resonate with me as we have similar tastes and cooking styles, but I love this book for much more than the recipes. All throughout the book are little sidebars filled with delicious little tidbits of information about California, both past and present. One may read about the first canned chile produced in Ventura or mid-1800's recipes from Senora Benecia Vallejo, the wife of General Mariano Vallejo. Ms. Jordan has produced a book that is filled with good things to eat, but is also filled with a wealth of information that makes ourcooking and dining experiences even richer.

Competing Visions of Islam in the United States : A Study of Los Angeles
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (30 July, 1997)
Author: Kambiz GhaneaBassiri

hey kambiz! it's me!
I remember the day that Kambiz received his book in the mail, "hot from the press," so to speak. We were studying in Middlebury, Vermont, and I had the honor to be a classmate of Kambiz. I flipped through the book, and though i didn't read it, it was obvious from the accuracy of his data on MSA-UCLA that he had done a considerable amount of fieldwork.

Competing Visions of Islam in the United States
GhaneaBassiri, an Iranian 174 doctoral student at Harvard, read widely, sent out a questionnaire, and talked to American Muslims. The result is perhaps the most sophisticated study to date of Muslim attitudes in the United States. He reaches two main conclusions.

First, immigrant and convert Muslims alike share a deeply ambivalent attitude toward American culture. They find immorality rampant in the country ("culturally retarded" is one interviewee's colorful term) 44 but see it as an exciting place of opportunity-not just for economic gain, but as a place "to live Islam." 44 This ambivalence, GhaneaBassiri finds, has direct political implications: "a significant number of Muslims, particularly immigrant Muslims, do not have close ties or loyalty to the United States." 47 Indeed, his questionnaire shows that 12 out of 15 immigrants and even 5 out of 15 converts feel more allegiance to a foreign country than to the United States. 45 Second, GhaneaBassiri finds that Muslims in the United States "are undecided about what Islam is and requires." 50 Taking advantage of America's unique religious freedom, they insist on exploring their Islamic identity and are bouyantly self-confident about their potential to lead the Muslim world. 57 This attitude, when coupled with the enormous ethnic and sectarian diversity of American Islam, translates into a disunity that has prevented American Muslims from influencing American politics. 101

Middle East Quarterly, Islam in the United States December 1998

The best book that I have ever read.
I am a moslem and I think there are more things that any researcher about Islam must tell the people and I think this book is very useful for all the people in all contries. I like to thanks Kambiz Gh. for this book. I wish to have more books from him about Islam.

Desert: The Mojave and Death Valley
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1999)
Authors: Jack W. Dykinga and Janice Emily Bowers
Average review score:

Inspiring book that will make you see!
This book just shows how spectacular a desert can look with the magnificent photos around the Mojave desert and Death valley of emptiness, stark flowers and blooms and just superb landscapes. It'll give you some inspiration to find something to look for even in a desert.

I know I will as I will be going to Ayer's Rock (Uluru) in Australia in a few months and it's also a big desert!

Superb Photography
This book is a beauty, some of the most beautiful photographs I have ever seen.

I spent the first week of September in southern California this year, and on Sunday before Labor Day I drove from Los Angeles up to Death Valley. I hadn't been there since I was a child and I have to say although it is a desolate and lonely place (and 114 degrees at Furnace Creek the day I was there) it is also one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The sand dunes at Mesquite Flat alone are worth the trip.

Everyone should see it, but if you can't buy the book. My copy came shrinkwrapped in plastic which I really like, the last thing you want is to buy a nice book like this in a bookstore where someone has spilled coffee on the pages.

A mastefterful work by one of the world's best photographers
There is a knock at my door and here is the UPS man delivering my order from Amazon.com. Among the books: Desert, The Mojave and Death Valley Photographs by Jack Dykinga, text by Janice Emily Bowers. I barely had time to read more than a page or two of the text before it made me want to go straight to the photos to see the place she was clearly, and intelligently writing about. And I was not disappointed: It was overwhelmed with joy of at being able to share the keeness of Mr. Dykinga's fine and perceptive photographic vision of that place. This is a more subtle body of work than the previous books based around his photographs.

The Sonoran Desert had a similar effect on me years ago and expanded my sense of what ilandscape photography could be. Stone Canyons did not have as great of affect on me as the first book

More than anything else, the images in this book remind me why the large format camera is such a tremendous aid to seeing something more clearly and perceptively than you can with the naked eye. even more so than a 35mm or medium format or easily portable digital gear can. Some of the photos even have a sense of humor to them and when did you last see that in a photograph of a natural landscape? The reproduction of the images appears to be first rate and the design and typography of the book match its contents in quality.

In short there are wonderful things to be found in this book.
